"Lucy Liu doesn't want to 'look a little Filipino'" reaction

So, just last October 11, Lucy Liu made a special guest appearance on The David Letterman show. Early on, David complemented her [Lucy] on her body, saying that she looked like she was in shape. When he asked whether she ran indoors or outdoors, she said indoors because it was easier and because if she ran outdoors, she would get darker and look "a little too filipino."

I honestly don't get why some of my fellow Filipinos are offended by that.

First of all, Filipinos are naturally dark to begin with. It's in our history and blood. I don't see why being dark is considered a bad thing. If it's true, why take offense when someone else says it.  If someone were to say that we were hardworking, people would be so excited. But if someone were to say that we were dark, people would find it offensive. Both statements are true anyway, so why be offended by the latter of the two?

Second, have you ever been to a Filipino supermarket/drugstore? There are literally shelves full of skin-whitening products. Literally, there are so many skin whitening soaps, lotions, creams, oils etc. I don't think we have to be so defensive about her [Lucy] statement since our culture knows this and is trying do change the way we look anyway.

Anyway, this is just how I feel about her interview. I'm not offended by it at all. Maybe some people are, maybe some aren't. I don't know, that's there opinion.

Here's her interview on The David Letterman show. You'll find her comment within the first minute.

Keep Dreaming.
